Understanding hemp, CBD, and responsible use

A simple guide to hemp-derived CBD, full-spectrum extracts, lab testing, and the language used around these products.

What is hemp?

Hemp is a variety of the cannabis plant that is grown for its naturally occurring compounds, fibres, seeds, and oils. Hemp used for consumer products is selected and processed differently from high-THC cannabis varieties.

What is CBD?

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one of the naturally occurring cannabinoids found in hemp. It is non-intoxicating, which means it does not produce the “high” associated with THC.

What does full-spectrum mean?

Full-spectrum hemp extract refers to an extract that keeps a broader range of naturally occurring plant compounds, rather than isolating a single compound. This may include cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and plant oils.

The hemp plant contains more than CBD

Hemp is a complex plant. Alongside CBD, it can contain other naturally occurring cannabinoids, aromatic terpenes, flavonoids, fatty acids, and plant waxes. The exact profile depends on the hemp variety, growing conditions, extraction method, and final formulation.

This is why clear product information matters. A responsible brand should explain what is in the product, how much CBD it contains, how it should be used, and where customers can request supporting test information.

Useful terms

  • Cannabinoids: naturally occurring compounds found in hemp.
  • Terpenes: aromatic plant compounds that contribute to scent and character. They are found in many herbs, fruits, and botanicals, and help shape the natural profile of the plant.
  • Flavonoids: plant compounds found in many fruits, herbs, and botanicals. They contribute to colour, plant character, and are widely studied as part of plant-rich diets.
  • Carrier oil: the oil used to dilute and carry hemp extract in an oil product.

Why lab testing matters

Lab testing helps provide clarity around product composition. It can be used to check CBD content, review cannabinoid profile, and support responsible product information.

Reading a CBD label

A clear label should make it easy to understand the amount of CBD in the product, suggested use, ingredients, storage advice, warnings, and whether the product is suitable for you.

Quality and transparency

Good CBD education should be calm, factual, and transparent. It should help customers understand the product without exaggeration, medical promises, or confusing language.

Responsible use

CBD products should be used thoughtfully and according to the product label. Start by reading the serving guidance, ingredients, and any warnings before use.

UK Food Standards Agency guidance advises that healthy adults should limit CBD intake from food products to 10mg per day. Consider your total daily intake from all CBD products combined.

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication, or managing a medical condition, seek professional advice before using CBD products.
